Facebook Cover Videos

Those of you who are long-term readers of our blog may remember that back in February of this year we took a look at Facebook Live Video – in particular what it was, how companies were using it, and what we thought of it.

Since that blog post Facebook Live Video has had a bit of a rocky time of it, but the organisation’s commitment to video hasn’t wavered; a commitment that can be reflected by its latest addition to the platform – Facebook Cover Videos.

If you’re a frequent user of the social media goliath (and who isn’t, let’s be honest) we’re sure you know what a cover image on Facebook is, but here’s a quick reminder – it’s the large image that adorns the top of a user’s profile or an organisation’s page and is generally the first thing you see when landing on a page.

Facebook isn’t one to rest on its laurels though, which is why it is introducing a Cover Video feature to replace this image. As an official statement from the company explains:

“We recently started testing the ability on desktop to upload a video as the Page cover. Once a cover video has been created, video will render when people visit the Page…by making cover video available, we want to help you create more engaging interaction and drive more rich experience for your audience”

If you haven’t seen a Facebook Cover Video yet though, don’t worry – the organisation is rolling them out over time and not every user has the opportunity to create one just yet.

So, what do we think?

It might not surprise you to read that we love this idea! It’s been a long time coming – Facebook users have made this suggestion to the company for a number of years now – but we’re delighted it now seems to be given the go ahead.

As creators of video productions ourselves (not sure if we’ve ever mentioned that before), we’re all for social media platforms utilising video in as many ways as possible, and we think this is a particularly innovative method of doing just that.

Not only that, we feel like Facebook Cover Videos are something we could offer our clients for an incredibly generous price* so if you are looking for one of your own, you know who to call!
