Stiliyan Petrov Foundation Charity Match

By Matt Weston

We were delighted to be given the opportunity to film a recent charity football match organised in aid of the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation.

The match, held at Boldmere St Michael’s in Sutton Coldfield, saw a select Petrov XI take on an Aston Villa Lions and Legends side headed by Villa favourite Tony Morley.

Having previously worked with Aston Villa FC and their supporter’s clubs, it was a pleasure to team up with Stiliyan Petrov and his foundation to record the match, which featured ex-England international Paul Merson, as well as former Villa stars Julian Joachim, Lee Hendrie, and Alan Wright.

As well as this highlights video, we also took the opportunity to record the match in its entirety, which you can see below.

It was fantastic to see “Stan” take the field again and we hope that the match will go on to become an annual event in support of his foundation.

Speaking to us after the match, organiser Stephen Rigby told us: “We had well over 1300 people there and we managed to raise £8400, which is absolutely fantastic.

“We’re planning for this to be an annual event for the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation and for it to grow in size year on year.”

Two years ago we were fortunate enough to record another video regarding Stiliyan Petrov. On that occasion we were at Villa Park for the emotional minutes applause in tribute to the Bulgarian after he had been diagnosed with acute leukaemia:
