There are, it must be said, an awful lot of websites on the world-wide web.
Ever the professional, as part of my research for this blog entry I decided to count them all, to provide the definitive answer as to just how many there are.
I managed to get up to 16,374 before Matt and Mike told me to stop wasting valuable company time and just put “there are an awful lot of websites”.
Despite the mind-boggling number of sites around, however, there are a few which really stand out from the crowd – for example, Amazon, Google, eBay, and, of course, Facebook.
You would think that if any site could rest on its laurels, it would be the global behemoth (great word) that is Facebook. That doesn’t appear to be the case, however.
If you pay attention to adverts on TV (or on screens in the centre of Birmingham, as I saw before Christmas) you might have noticed that in recent months the social network giant has added a new string to its bow – Facebook Live Video.
In their own words, Facebook Live is “live video streaming…a fun, engaging way to connect with your followers and grow your audience.”
When it comes to live video streaming, Facebook isn’t a trendsetter. YouTube have been live streaming sporting events such as NFL games for a while now, and the app Periscope has proven to be popular both here in the UK and across the pond.
This toe dip into the live streaming waters is still a bold move for a social media platform, however.
So, what do we think?
From a business point of view, we’ve been impressed. It’s clear Facebook mean business with Facebook Live Video, and are committed to making it a successful venture.
As such, Live videos are pushed up people’s feeds and given priority, with regular text-based posts not featuring anywhere near as prominently.
This makes using Facebook Live Video a really good opportunity for your company to increase its external visibility online, and give your social media followers insights into your business in a really cool way.
Facebook Live is perfect for a “behind the scenes” look at your business HQ, or maybe even for a live look-in at a project you’re undertaking at an external location.
No wonder then high-profile companies such as Grazia, Callaway Golf, BuzzFeed, and Stone’s Throw Media (come on, allow us this one!) have taken to using the function in recent months. We don’t think we’ll/they’ll be the last to do so, either.
So, whilst we know that Facebook as a whole can be a mixed bag, Facebook Live Video gets the thumbs up from us – it’s certainly something to consider implementing as part of your company’s wider marketing plan.
