Explained: What are motion graphics?

Ah, just what are the answers to those burning topics like the purpose of life, the chicken or the egg and what the hell is motion graphics video? It’s a good job we’re on hand to solve the mysteries surrounding them. Well, the latter topic anyway…

Used to create the illusion of rotation or movement, the use of motion graphics in corporate video is becoming increasingly popular. Motion graphics are generally perfect for short, sharp social media videos, adverts and home page videos.

We’ve worked on and seen them work in demonstrations, tricky explanatory guides and ‘how to’ videos – but what actually are they? Our handy guide below should answer all of those burning questions you definitely have.

What are motion graphics?

Motion graphics – explained

Characteristically digital footage or animation, these kind of graphics are visuals which are edited to show an illusion of rotary movement. Typically, it’s best practice to have a voiceover in most motion graphics videos as they are often used to break down complex instructions or to present infographics in a more enticing way.

How can motion graphics benefit my business?

While standard 2D or 3D animation both have their different benefits, motion graphics are often more popular for explanatory or informative purposes, as they don’t necessarily follow a storyline or have any characters. Typically, they are most useful with components, logos and complex information. There are different types of motion graphics – kinetic typography and infographic animation – both of which serve differing purposes.

What is kinetic typography?

Kinetic typography is a method of motion graphics which combines text and movement to convey expression. Think of it as the user’s eyes following a journey of text, with said text pointing them in the direction you want them to go. You can use kinetic typography to make certain words big, small, long and wide or stretched to give a sense of expression in a way that doesn’t need too much custom animation. Kinetic typography is also known to be one of the quicker processes of video production as it just requires custom text and a voiceover. Perfect for those looking for quicker turnarounds!

What is infographic animation?

Similar to kinetic typography, infographic animation is used to portray vast amounts of statistical information in a way that’s more aesthetically pleasing – as well as shareable. Rather than delivering key information on a blog post or a simple graphic, why not open the door to a whole new world of possibilities with a professional animated video? After all, 4 out of 5 shoppers say a video showing how a product or service works is important!
