What is Video Production?

We know what you’re about to say… video production is pretty much what it says on the tin, right?

Well…to an extent, yes! But also, no.

Video production comes in many forms, and when you take the pre-production, production, and post-production stages into account, it becomes a much longer process than you’re probably led to believe.

In this blog post, we’ll delve into what video production actually is – and yes, we really can drag this seemingly simple explanation out over several hundred words. Just watch us!

So, what is video production?

Video production is the process of creating content to form a digital video – but it’s much more than just filming!

The production process includes three main stages:

Pre-production

No filming is actually done here. This is the ‘planning’ stage which can include the creation of a storyboard or a script. Mainly however it’s where everything is put in place for any upcoming filming – such as location planning, casting, and lighting.

Production

This stage is pretty self-explanatory – it’s the filming (or production) of the video once the pre-production stage is complete.

Post-production

This stage covers all the elements of the process that occur after filming of the video is complete – including editing and the adding of components such as audio and special effects (if required).

OK, cool! But why is video production important?

Video is the fastest growing type of content and, according to Cisco, online video will make up more than 82% of internet traffic by 2022 – a four-fold rise from 2017.

With video being utilised in a number of ways – such as to train staff, market products and communicate with potential clientele – it’s one of the most effective ways of both getting your brand heard and making your message hit home.

Be honest – would you rather watch a 15 minute “safety in the workplace” video or read 50 pages on health and safety?

(Yes, we know the answer is probably “neither”, but come on, the video is only 15 minutes!)

Would you rather watch a three minute video explaining how to fix your boiler, or read the 120-page instruction manual? We certainly know which we’d choose…

…not that we’re biased, or anything.

What types of video production are there?

Good question! Don’t be fooled into thinking that video productions are just your conventional filmed efforts.

Instead, video productions can be created using a wide variety of techniques, such as…

Aerial videography
Motion graphics
2D animation
3D animation
Timelapse video
360 video

Production companies can adapt to help you meet your business goals, with aerial video particularly good at showcasing the exterior of sites, timelapses perfect for fast-paced tours of locations, and animation ideal for explaining complex subjects.
