Why We're Not Yes Men (And Women!)

Have you ever seen the Jim Carrey film ‘Yes Man’?

If you haven’t – congratulations, it’s not very good!

If you have – you’ll know that the whole premise of the movie is that Carrey’s character, the lovable loser “Carl”, turns his life around by challenging himself to say “yes” to pretty much everything thrown at him over the course of a year.

It’s an intoxicating idea because the vast majority of us love saying “yes” and hate saying “no”. “Yes” feels positive, whilst “No” feels negative.

As true as this may be however, here at Stone’s Throw we don’t think saying “yes” all the time is a good idea. Here’s why…

OKAY IS NOT OKAY

The main reason we don’t want to fall into the trap of becoming “Yes Men” ourselves is due to one of our core values – that “okay is NOT okay”.

Sometimes we get approached by our clients for a video based upon an idea or format that they have come up with.

This is great (and certainly isn’t “wrong”) but often – such as in the example Matt alludes to in our video above – this approach isn’t getting the most out of the video and isn’t quite solving the actual problem the organisation want to eliminate.

In short, it’s “Okay”….which isn’t “Okay”!

WE HAVE A COMMITMENT TO OUR CLIENTS

When this happens, just saying “yes” to this proposed idea/format and moving on would be easy like Sunday morning, but it wouldn’t be the right thing to do.

As part of our commitment to our clients, we don’t want to just fulfil a brief, do the bare minimum, and then go home.

Instead, we challenge them and their ideas – not in a “you’re shit” way, but in a “how can we make this better?” way.

This allows our resulting video to yield better results and ensure that it’s what our client needs rather than what they initially wanted.

WE BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

That’s beneficial for our clients and ourselves both in the short and long term.

In the short term, this obviously leads to great results – hooray!

In the long term however, these consistent, tangible, great results can lead to relationships being built between ourselves and our clients based on trust, assurance, and co-operation – three things we’re always proud to provide.

So that’s why we’re not “Yes Men”!
