To create an animated explainer video about an Access to HE Advanced Learner Loan.
QAA wanted to create an animated explainer video that showed the benefits of an Access to HE Advanced Learner Loan and how an individual could get access to one.
Advanced learner loans are available for individuals aged 19 or above to undertake approved qualifications at levels 3 to level 6 (A Levels through to degree), at an approved provider in England. Advanced learner loans give individuals access to financial support for tuition costs similar to that available in higher education and are administered by Student Finance England.
QAA safeguards standards and improves the quality of UK higher education wherever it is delivered around the world. They check that students working towards a UK qualification get the higher education they are entitled to expect.
The Advanced Learner Loan allows those who may not be able to afford the costs associated with Higher Education to access courses and pay for things such as equipment, books, living costs and, in some cases, childcare.
There are a number of problems associated with Student Loans, most significantly (and I’m sure you’ll agree) the idea of paying it back. *shudder*
There is a lack of awareness around loans such as this one, and they can often be shrouded in complicated financial jargon.
These can be contributing factors to people being put off the idea and can eventually result in less people signing up for higher education courses.
The animated explainer video was to show older students what kind of financial options they have when applying for further education, both locally and internationally and encourage them to apply.
On a wider scale, with fewer people in higher education there can be negative impacts on the economy. There’d also be more people missing out on Thirsty Thursdays Student Night in Wolverhampton. Our hearts go out to all those who don’t know what that is.
QAA sent us their script to kick off the project, which we then modified slightly to keep within the 3 minute timeframe.
We then set about creating a storyboard with our vision for the animated explainer video, including snippets alongside the text in the script.
Jamie and Preeti worked their magic and presented QAA with a final product. After a couple of amendments we had a happy customer!
Jamie said on the project
“The biggest challenge was to try and understand the information being given to us to convey in animation because we were told we could be quite energetic in the concept but then have to be simple enough for potential non-english speakers to be able to follow along too, so there was a question of what kind of visual imagery can we do that is both visually entertaining but not so heavy as to not confuse all the viewers.”
Preeti, who led the animation on this project, said
“The QAA Access to HE animated explainer video was very enjoyable to work on. We were able to add more flavour to this animation by implementing sound effects and adding more visual fidelity. Both of which I personally love to add as the small details can make a huge difference.”
Michael from QAA said
“The video will be a very useful resource for our Access to HE work - it explains what can often be a confusing topic in a clear, concise and engaging format, which will be particularly beneficial for students.”
