GNDR
Our Brief

GNDR (Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction) wanted to create an animation that advertised a new publication. They wanted the guide to explain how charities can do more to involve people that are living in disaster-prone countries in their projects and plans. The video was played at the international conference on preventing disasters.

The publication is live on their website and provides practical advice on the risk-informed development planning process. It aims to strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations, to engage in transformative risk-informed development planning with communities most at risk.

Charity Animation

The GNDR annual conference is a pretty big deal! GNDR is the largest international network of civil society organisations working together to strengthen the resilience of communities most at risk of disasters.

Member organisations under the GNDR banner connect and collaborate, benefit from capacity strengthening opportunities, implement our global projects, and get involved in research and advocacy initiatives.

The publication on the website would act as a guide and provide practical advice for each of these organisations. Think of it as the Dragon Scroll in Kung Fu Panda, or a collection of Mr Miyagi’s teachings in Karate Kid.

The problem faced by GNDR was that they didn’t have an asset to advertise their new guide.

Without advertising the guide through animation, they would have had to use more traditional methods and spend valuable stage time talking about the information.

An animation allows for quick and effective sharing of the information concerned, an easily distributable asset and a time saver.

After initial discussions, both parties agreed that a more corporate aesthetic with animated graphics and icons would be more suitable than animated characters and a playful feeling.

It may surprise you to find out that, as an organisation, we aren’t the most clued up on development choices and the innate risks associated with disasters, so regular check-ins and feedback from the client were a must on this project.

After the storyboard and script had been finalised, the animation work could begin!

Jamie, our head of animation, said

“It was interesting to work on an animation like this, having luckily never really had to consider a disaster as part of my life! It was great to find out more about the subject and make an animation for a conference that would help people across the world! It was important to get the visuals correct and with the help of the client we managed to!”
