Regeneration of Wolverhampton

Even if you know nothing about the American politician Benjamin Franklin himself, you’re probably still familiar with this famous quote of his from 1789…

“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

Over 200 years later, Franklin’s words still ring true, but perhaps his quote could be updated slightly to read like this instead…

“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes, and people moaning about where they live.”

Indeed, whinging about the town/city we live in seems to be a part of our nation’s identity, just as much as the white cliffs of Dover or the ‘Antiques Roadshow’ are.

Here at Stone’s Throw however we want to take a stand against this negativity, which is why in this blog entry we want to talk about our home city – Wolverhampton – and all the good stuff that’s happening here of late.

We’re proud residents of the city, which is why we’re thrilled with the regeneration of Wolverhampton that’s currently taking place and wanted to take a moment to highlight it.

What do we mean? Well…

  • The former Springfield Brewery site in the city’s centre is being turned into a campus thanks to a £100m project led by the University of Wolverhampton
  • The £100m ‘Wolverhampton Interchange’ initiative is transforming the city’s transport gateways, with international quality rail and bus terminals providing the centrepieces of a wider development project
  • The University of Wolverhampton is collaborating with two other universities in the region regarding the newly formed WMCU (West Midlands Combined Universities) initiative
  • Marston’s Brewery, which has a presence in the city, is celebrating the fact that three of its beer brands have been listed in the ‘Morning Advertiser Drinks List: Top 100 Brands’ (a list which pulls together the top drinks brands from across the UK) for 2016
  • Wolverhampton Grammar School has recently been given the highest possible rating of ‘excellent’ across the board by the Independent Schools Inspectorate
  • A £2.8m revamp of Wolverhampton’s historic art gallery is set to begin
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers FC are now enjoying better financial times thanks to its parent company of Fosun, as well as running some fantastic campaigns in the local community regarding becoming season ticket holders
  • Wolverhampton College have been named in the top 15% of colleges in England for success rates for 16 to 18-year-olds – and graded as good with outstanding features by Ofsted
  • The City of Wolverhampton market is to get a new long term home as part of the £55m ‘Westside’ regeneration scheme
  • Work is underway on a new £10.1m Science, Technology and Prototyping Centre at the University of Wolverhampton Science Park
  • The i54 South Staffordshire business park is up and running and boasts occupiers such as Jaguar Land Rover

Alongside these success stories, we like to think we’re playing our part in the regeneration of Wolverhampton too!

We’ve been working with organisations associated with the city since our inception – as you can see in the examples below – and are always pleased to highlight any projects which have a positive impact on the local economy.

So not only is the regeneration of Wolverhampton well on its way, it’s also more affordable to run a business here compared to, for example, London, and it’s a (wait for it) stone’s throw(!) away from Birmingham or, if countryside is more your thing, the beautiful county of Shropshire.

Now that’s all something to shout about – which is why we’re doing precisely that!
