University of Wolverhampton Alumni Awards Live Stream

Alumni Awards Live Stream
University of Wolverhampton
Our Brief

The University of Wolverhampton needed to hold a successful alumni awards live stream in June 2022. They wanted alumni to feel like they’d attended a high quality event and make any snippets shared afterwards look a lot better. It was important to avoid any issues with having potentially hundreds/thousands of alumni in a Zoom call and having to tell them to mute their microphones.

This would be the first ever University of Wolverhampton alumni awards, that would celebrate the achievements of previous students.

In June 2022, we hosted the Alumni Awards in the Stone’s Throw Media studio; filming the host live and managing the contributors on the Zoom call.

The University of Wolverhampton is a leading modern university that is steeped in history, with a tradition of providing education and opportunity dating back almost two centuries.

Today, the University offers courses in over 70 subjects and has more than 22,000 students studying with them.

Alumni Awards Live Stream

With the alumni engagement levels at the University, the live stream needed to be able to host a large number of people, have countdown timers and splash screens, have promo videos and the nomination videos all on one platform.

The issue that the University was facing was that they needed to host the awards ceremony in the same way that they would host it as a live event, but needed the appropriate place to do so.

We had invested in live streaming equipment way back during a certain pandemic in order to be on call, like very basic superheroes. As we came out of the University of Wolverhampton ourselves, we were very excited to be part of this awards ceremony.

The cause of the issue was that since said pandemic, the awards had been hosted online successfully, and the University needed to reach an international audience, so there needed to be a continuation.

With online events, you need to stay on top of technical issues that you wouldn’t have to consider when doing an in person event. You also need to make sure that the live stream is visually appealing and engaging for the audience.

One of the technical issues that the University wanted to focus on was the fact that there could potentially be an audience of thousands, so they needed to make sure that the microphones of attendees were automatically switched off, so there wouldn’t be a Jackie Weaver style incident, or essentially white noise drowning out the hosts.

The promo videos that were played throughout the awards ceremony had been created previous to the event, as had the countdown timer and splash screens that would break it all up over the evening.

Especially for the event, we collected the nomination videos and filmed the Vice Chancellor at the main City Campus, also to be shown during the live stream.

The live stream needed to be broadcasted out via YouTube, which is an easy platform to distribute and embed on the University portals.

As part of the live streaming project, we also edited the winner’s messages that were shown as they collected their awards.

Tom, our head of video, said

“We came up with a solution to allow the university to live stream their awards ceremony to an international audience from a single location. We used our recently improved studio to have an in person host present several awards to finalists around the world using Zoom. The end result was a seamless experience for the viewers and allowed the Alumni team at the university to see how future events could take shape.”

David Wedge, Deputy Head of Alumni Relations at the University, said

“Stone’s Throw Media streamed our inaugural Alumni Awards event in 2022, which was broadcast to our global community, celebrating the successes and accomplishments of our alumni. They were honestly fantastic – there were true professionals, managing the event stream from start to finish, and ultimately, delivered a first-class and faultless event. Not only did they provide a great service, but they were valuable contributors in brainstorming planning sessions, providing ideas to help make the event to be the best it could be. I fully recommend them to anyone considering a company to deliver live streaming”
